A pallet rack is a container used for storing inventory of a company or other industrial organizations. The inventory is racked on horizontal pallets, which has multiple compartments. These pallet racks enable the organizations to store their inventory in a very efficient manner. Together, when linked the racks form a pallet racking system. A single rack is composed of many structures such as follows;

Load beams which are mainly composed of step beams or box beams. These sturdy and load carrying beams are used to support the weight of the objects places on the racks.

Frame columns are also known as upright columns which have holes in them to install the horizontal beams to hold the inventory. These columns differ according to the thickness of steel, load borne by them and different styles.

Pallet supports are the clips which are fit into the holes of the upright columns. These supports come in a variety of styles namely the hat channel, tec-screw and many more.

Wire decks are one of the important constituents of the pallet racks. These are used as additional support racks so that the weight borne by the racks is distributed evenly and correctly. These wire decks come in 3 main styles. These are waterfall decking, reverse decking and the lay in decking.

The other important constituents of the pallet racks are foot plates which support the racks at the base, shims used to support the racks when they are placed on uneven surfaces, row spacers, diagonal and horizontal braces to provide extra strength to the racks, wall ties, column protectors and guard rails to provide safety to the humans working with the racks.

The different types of the pallet racks are selective, structural, very narrow aisle, push back, carton flow and drive in. These racks have different structural styles, configurations and safety considerations.

While installing and using pallet racks various safety precautions need to be taken. Some of them are as follows

* Loose components should be reported as early as possible

* Climbing on the racks is strictly prohibited as they can cause collapsing of the racks.

* Pallets of good quality should be used and their regular supervision must be done to avoid mishaps.

* Overloading of racks is not recommended.
